About Us

Our Story

In 2015 we identified the need for a portable medical device to assist paramedics in the placement of IV catheters.  It is often critical paramedics begin delivering fluid and medication to the patient before they reach the hospital.  If the paramedic fails to place the IV after several attempts they must make the decision to either let the patient go without fluids or turn to more invasive fluid delivery methods such as IO.  Our company has developed a novel technology designed to increase IV placement success.  We are now working closely with paramedics to commercialize this technology.

Our Team

South Mountain Medical LLC was founded by Nick Hirdt and Peter Schwarzenberg.  Nick and Peter are both engineers that grew up in families that work in the medical field.  This has inspired them to dedicate their lives to developing technology to advance medicine..

Our Mission

It is the Mission of South Mountain Medical to provide paramedics with medical devices that assist in providing safe and effective patient treatment.  We involve paramedics throughout the entire product development process in order to create medical devices designed specifically to suite their needs.

Peter Schwarzenberg

Peter graduated from Lehigh University in the spring of 2016 with his Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering. Peter was the  winner of the 2016 Andrew Wilson Knecht III Memorial Award, given to a senior who shows the greatest potential for applying technical training to a practical application. He is remaining at Lehigh as a PhD candidate in Mechanical Engineering with a research focus in medical devices.

Nick Hirdt

Nick is a senior at Lehigh University pursuing Bachelor’s degrees in Bioengineering and Mechanical Engineering.  He was the youngest presenter at the 2014 David and Lorraine Freed Undergraduate Research Symposium and will be presenting research at the 2016 Biomedical Engineering Society Annual Meeting.  Nick has worked for and with several medical device companies over the last several years including Stryker Orthopaedic and Cryoconcepts LP.
